An ideal society managed by Sapotamas. Underneath, terrifying creatures called Digimon appear. After a classmate is attacked, Tomoro Tenma's emotions explode. Suddenly his Sapotama shines and Gekkomon is born.
Summary[]
On May 17, 2050, in the Mirror World, Chiropmon alerts Makoto Kuonji that it has detected Mitsuo Minezaki and his FanBeemon. Reina Sakuya and her Pristimon leap after it, waving off Makoto's pleas to wait for Kyo Sawashiro, and she has Pristimon digivolve to Wolvermon. Unfortunately, she quickly learns that FanBeemon was empowered by Mitsuo's e-Pulse when it fends off Wolvermon's attacks. As a plan B, Chiropmon uses its ultrasonic waves to disable Mitsuo, allowing the bounty hunters to catch up to Mitsuo and charge him with robbing a watch store. However, they are caught offguard when he uses his Sapotama to digivolve FanBeemon into Waspmon, sending it to deal a fatal strike while gloating that it's too late to beg for mercy.
Fortunately, Murasamemon deals the coup de grâce to Waspmon at the last second, reverting it to Pupumon, while his Partner Kyo scornfully holds Mitsuo to his own words. Kyo indolently apologizes for his lateness by explaining he stopped at a convenience store, then detains Mitsuo in order to send him to the Ministry of Civil Protection.
The next day, a frazzled Hitomi Shinomiya is running late to school because her own Sapotama is on the fritz and failing to charge. She trips and accidentally tosses the device, but it is caught by her classmate, Tomoro Tenma. Neither of them notice when the Sapotama reacts oddly to Tomoro's touch, instantly recharging it, until later—when Hitomi's Sapotama reports her exam results are unexpectedly excellent, gets her lunch order wrong, and drains her bank account. She tracks Tomoro down and accuses him of breaking her device, but he explains it's an accidental glitch that occasionally occurs when he touches a Sapotama. While Hitomi's dream is to earn her way into Shangri-La Egg, Tomoro demurs that he would rather be a simple drummer and advises her to visit a repair shop.
After school, Tomoro returns home to his home in the sunken, ruined part of Hikarigahama to find that his brother Asuka is out and leftovers are in the fridge. He reminisces about a band practice session where his brother encouraged him to follow his own "beat", then is awoken when Asuka returns home. While watching the news, the brothers learn that Hitomi was afflicted by the mysterious Cold Heart phenomenon. Stricken, Tomoro believes that he and his inexplicable effect on Sapotamas are at fault, and becomes upset when Asuka refuses to share his poorly hidden insight on the situation.
Even more upset when Asuka leaves, Tomoro rants to no one about Cold Heart, and becomes furious when his own Sapotama blithely recites information on the malady despite him asking it to be quiet. He grabs the irksome device to toss it away, but is surprised when his strange effect once again triggers, this time causing the Sapotama to go into an error state plastered with the word "Digimon". Even more shocking, a strange, reptilian creature, Gekkomon, suddenly emerges from the egg, swallows it, then bites Tomoro to absorb his e-Pulse, inflicting the beginnings of Cold Heart on him. He shakes the creature off and it scampers away, but he follows it when it's mutterings indicate that it knows where Hitomi is.[please confirm]
While following the Digimon, Tomoro is ambushed by an ornamented Hyemon, who has tracked him by the smell of his vivacious e-Pulse. The first Hyemon is interrupted by the return of Gekkomon and the Hyemon's older brother, each of which eager to feed on Tomoro's e-Pulse. Grateful for the distraction, Tomoro turns to flee and is rescued by the sudden arrival of Asuka, who scolds him for leaving the house but reveals that he is somehow familiar with Digimon. They escape through the mazelike wreckage of the area, but Asuka unexpectedly trips while jumping across the broken girders of a decaying roof and is caught in the clenched jaws of the older[please confirm] Hyemon. Though Tomoro frantically tries to rescue his brother, Asuka gravely warns that Digimon are too strong for humans to fight, and with his last words, he urges Tomoro to follow his "beat".
Horrified, Tomoro is forced to watch as the Hyemon drains Asuka into a full Cold Heart, causing his brother to fall into and seemingly drown in the murky waters below. Tomoro is quickly cornered by the Hyemon pair but is suddenly swallowed by Gekkomon. Surprisingly, Tomoro finds himself in a strange void, where Gekkomon's voice speaks to him and explains that he's too weak to fight. He asks Tomoro to share his e-Pulse in order to fight back, and the boy accepts. Now crackling with power, Gekkomon takes the Hyemon by surprise as the new Partners stance up to unleash havoc.
