Synopsis[]
Yao Qinglan and Sangomon are on the way to watch Shoto Kazama's duel against Sam the Clown. Sangomon tells Yao they need to hurry so that they can get there sooner, though she says that she can't go any faster as so many players logging out at once alongside the BlackImperialdramon rampage had caused the servers to be going much slower than usual. As Yao analyses the duel data from Violet "Vi" Inboots's duel with Sam, she becomes surprised and alarmed at the fact that Sam had used "that power" to turn its cards into different cards mid duel as that ability wasn't supposed to be able to be used on regular cards. Sangomon asks what will happen if Shoto loses like Violet had, with Yao saying she will do what Shoto did and use her Unique Emblem to take over in his place. This worries Sangomon, as intervening in a duel that had already intervened in would put Yao's data at risk — though Yao says that's a risk she'll just have to take. As they arrive, they see it was currently Shoto's turn and watch from there on — with Arisa Kinosaki telling them what had happened in the duel thus far.
During the duel, Sam rewrites cards he has into cards that didn't exist until that very moment — allowing him to cheat and gain unfair advantages. This has Shoto think he can't win, though a pep talk from Pteromon spurs him on to keep going. As Sam's cheating continues to give him the advantage, Shoto falls into despair again as his field is wiped due to the effects of the cheated cards.

Gameplay notes[]
Shoto Kazama vs. Sam the Clown[]
Note: This section includes coverage of actions that were omitted in the comic but explained in its Battle Coverage article. This writeup uses ref notes to indicate these instances. In addition, standard actions such as drawing a card at start of turn or after digivolving are generally omitted for clarity.
The start of the duel is skipped. Shoto Kazama has four security cards left, ST18-04: Pteromon, EX7-036: Zephagamon, and EX7-064: Shoto Kazama on his field. Sam the Clown has all five of its security cards, EX3-004: Veemon, BT20-092: Battle NPC with a BT20-065: Wormmon under it, and another Wormmon in its Breeding Area.[1]
Shoto uses Zepahagamon's Vortex effect, allowing it to attack a Digimon despite his turn having come to an end. He uses his Tamer's effect, suspending it to give Zephagamon the Pierce (check security after destroying a Digimon) and Blocker (can Block enemy attacks) effects[1] then has it attack and destroy the suspended Veemon. Its Pierce effect allows it to check security, and its Security+1 effect allows it to check an extra shield. It battles against Shadramon: P-110 and EX3-008: Flamedramon[1] and wins since, it has higher DP than both (its DP even higher than usual due to the inherited effects of Pteromon and ST18-08: Galemon[1] though this had no effect on the battles). As Zephagamon had just destroyed a Digimon in battle, he uses the inherited effect of EX7-004: Fluffymon to give him an extra memory.[1]
On Sam's turn, he uses the effect of his Tamer to destroy itself and play the Digimon below it as he does not have a Digimon on his side of the field. The newly played Wormmon uses its On Play effect, which gives Pteromon the ability "when deleted, lose 1 memory". He pays 2 memory instead of 3, digivolving Wormmon to Shadramon for a lower cost as it is digivolving from Wormmon — with this putting Sam on 1 memory. Shadramon's When Digivolving effect allows Sam to play a Veemon or Wormmon from his trash for free, though at the cost of it being suspended when it is summoned — with him using the effect to play a Veemon. Veemon's On Play effect allows Sam to trash one card in his hand (either a Free Attribute Digimon or a card that mentions Imperialdramon in its text) to draw two cards and uses the effect to trash EX3-010: Paildramon.[1] At this point, Sam pays a lowered cost of 2 to digivolve Veemon into BT16-018: ExVeemon, since it's digivolving from Veemon, but then overwrites the card mid digivolution so that it was now digivolving into BT20-011: ExVeemon instead. The changed ExVeemon's When Digivolving effect deletes a Digimon with less than 3000DP, and deletes Pteromon — which also gives Sam an extra memory due to the previously added deletion effect. The rest of ExVeemon's effect allows Sam to DNA digivolve two Digimon onto his field into either a Free Attribute Digimon or a Digimon with Imperialdramon in its name and uses it to DNA digivolve into BT16-077: Dinobeemon. Dinobeemon's When Digivolving effect allows Sam to play a Lv5 or lower Free Attrbiute Digimon from his trash for free — with Sam overwriting EX3-010 Paildramon in his trash, turning it it the new card BT20-016: Palidramon. The rest of Dinobeemon's effect gives one of his Digimon the Rush ability. He plays the newly changed Paildramon, and uses its On Play effect to give Dinobeemon Piercing, 4000 more DP, and allowing it to attack. Dinobeemon now has 16000DP (4000 more from Paildramon's effect, and another 2000 each from Veemon and ExVeemon's inherited effects) and has Dinobeemon attack Shoto directly. He uses the Raid effect of Dinobeemon — which allows it to change its attack target to the Digimon on Shoto's field with the highest DP. It attacks destroys Zepahgamon and it uses its newly gained Piercing ability to check a security shield — easily defeating ST18-07: Kokatorimon[1]. Sam pays 2 memory and uses the Option Card BT20-094: Emperor Dragon of Calamity, then rewrites the EX3-061: Dinobeemon card in his trash into BT20-074: Dinobeemon. He uses the effect of his Option Card to play a Free Attribute Digimon from his trash for 5 lower cost, paying 3 to play the newly created Dinobeemon. Dinobeemon's On Play effect allows Sam to add a Free Attribute Digimon or a Digimon with Imperialdramon in its name from the Trash to his hand, and uses it to add BT20-076: Imperialdramon Dragon Mode ACE. The Option card remains on Sam's field, as it has a Delay effect.
Shoto starts his turn with 6 memory, then gains 1 more due to his Tamer effect as Sam has a Digimon on the field. Shoto hatches a Fluffymon in the Breeding Area, then digivolves it to EX7-031[1]. Shoto plays EX7-074: MedievalGallantmon from his hand, and uses its effect to Suspend Sam's Dinobeemon and Paildramon[1] and lower the Play Cost by 4. The Play Cost was now 7, moving Shoto from 7 memory to 0, with Shoto using MedievalGallantmon's effect which allows it to use one of its When Digivolving effects as a Digimon had just been played (itself). He uses its effect to suspend the other Dinobeemon and attempt to delete the Paildramon. Paildramon's effect activates. As a Dinobeemon or Paildramon was about to be deleted — Sam is allowed to DNA digivolve two of his Digimon into Imperialdramon Dragon Mode. He uses this effect to DNA the Paildramon that was about to die with one of the Dinobeemon on the field into the ACE Dragon Mode in his hand. Its When Digivolving effect activates, allowing it to delete a Digimon on the field with 11000DP or less. It deletes MedievalGallantmon. As it was formed via DNA digivolution, the rest of its effect allows it to digivolve to Digimon named Imperialdramon Figther Mode. It digivolves to BT20-020: Imperialdramon Fighter Mode, then uses its When Digivolving effect to prevent Shoto from playing Tamers or Digimon until the end of his turn. As it has an Imperialdramon Dragon Mode in its digivolution sources, it also trashes the top card of Shoto's security (Kokatorimon[1]). As Shoto's security had a card removed, Figther Mode can also delete a Digimon on Shoto's field with the same or less DP than it — though it has no targets as Shoto's field is empty. This also activates the Delay effect of Emperor Dragon of Calamity, allowing Sam to play a Dragon Mode for free from the digivolution sources of a Figther Mode as Shoto's security stack had lost a card — which he proceeds to do.

Synopsis[]
Shoto Kazama and Sam the Clown continue to duel.
Just as Shoto was about to lose, Zephagamon becomes enveloped in light and reminds Shoto about just how much Shoto has "digivolved" and that he is not the same Shoto he first met. As they bond, they both decide they don't want to lose and as they do — the light effects Shoto's hand. Just like Sam had been doing the entire duel, Shoto overwrites the Zephagamon card in his hand — with it becoming BT20-101: Zephagamon ACE. He uses the newly transformed card to win and saves LACUNA.

Shoto Kazama uses the effect of the EX7-074: MedievalGallantmon in his hand, suspending Sam the Clown's BT20-076: Imperialdramon Dragon Mode ACE and BT20-020: Imperialdramon Fighter Mode and allowing him to play it for 4 cost lower. He pays 7 memory, putting Sam on 7, to play MedievalGallantmon and uses its effect which allows it to use one of its When Digivolving effects as a Digimon had just been played (itself). He uses its effect to delete a Digimon with 14000 or less DP (8000+3000 more for each suspended Digimon) and uses it to delete the 12000DP Dragon Mode ACE. As it was just deleted, its Overflow effect activates — giving Shoto 4 memory, which moves Sam from 7 to 3. At the end of Shoto's turn, he uses the Vortex effect of MedievalGallantmon — which allows it to attack opponents Digimon, even despite the fact it had been played this turn. He uses the effect of his Tamer card EX7-064: Shoto Kazama to give MedievalGallantmon the Pierce (check security after destroying a Digimon) and Blocker (can Block enemy attacks) effects[1] and has it attack and destroy BT20-074: Dinobeemon. It uses its piercing effect to check Sam's security, and defeats the checked EX3-010: Paildramon since it has higher DP.[1]
Sam moves BT20-065: Wormmon from his Breeding Area to the Battle Area[1], then has Imperialdramon Figther Mode attack Shoto directly. Sam uses Figther Mode's Raid effect, which allows him to change the target from Shoto to the Digimon on his field with the highest DP — MedievalGallantmon. As Figther Mode has higher DP (13000 vs 11000) it deletes it, and uses its Piercing effect to check Shoto's security. EX3-010: Paildramon's inherited effect gives it Security Attack+1, and as such it checks two cards — the first EX7-069: Wind Slicer[1], and the second, ST18-11: Parrotmon[1]. Wind Slicer's security effect activates, allowing Shoto to suspend a Lv6 or lower Digimon. He uses this to suspend Sam's Wormmon.[1]
- The battle write up is inconsistent as to what Shoto's 4th security card is. The image at the start shows Parrotmon as fourth, whilst the write up states it was ST18-09: Deramon. Regardless of which, neither Digimon is strong enough to defeat Imperialdramon.
Sam pays 2 memory to digivolve Wormmon to BT20-066: Stingmon, then pays 4 memory to Play BT20-011: ExVeemon from his hand. He uses its On Play effect, which allows him to DNA Digivolve two Digimon on his field to either a Free Attribute a Digimon or an Imperialdramon. He uses the effect to DNA Digivolve them into Paildramon.
- Stingmon's On Play effect tries to delete a Lv3 Digimon, but fails as there is no target. Paildramon's effect tries to Play a free Dinobeemon from the trash, but it fails as there is no target.
Shoto moves EX7-031: Pteromon[1] from the Breeding Area to the Battle Area, then gains 1 memory from his Tamer card (taking him to 4) as Sam has a Digimon. Shoto digivolves Pteromon to EX7-032: Galemon for 1 cost— lowered by 1 due to Pteromon's effect as it's digivolving to a Bird or Avian type Digimon.[1] He uses the When Digivolving effect of Galemon, which allows him to play a Shoto Kazama card for free as he has 1 or less Tamer on his field (he has one) and uses it to play BT20-085: Shoto Kazama.[1] He pays 3 memory to digivolve it to EX7-034: GrandGalemon, and uses its effect to suspend itself and make itself immune to Sam's Digimon's effects until the end of Sam's next turn. He pays 4 more memory, digivolving it to EX7-036: Zephagamon, and uses its When Digivolving effect to suspend Paildramon.[1] As it is now the end of his turn, he uses the effects of both his Tamer cards. EX7 gives it Piercing and Blocker and unsuspends its as it's a Vortex Warrior, whilst BT20 suspends one of Sam's Digimon and gives a Vortex Warrior 2000DP.
- Which Digimon he suspended isn't mentioned. He could still target the already suspended Paildramon, since suspended Digimon can still be targeted with said effect.
Shoto uses Zephagamon's Vortex effect to attack and destroy Imperialdramon, and also uses its When Attacking effect to suspend itself. As it suspended itself, the secondary effect allows Shoto to send one Digimon to the bottom of Sam's deck — and uses said effect to get rid of Paildramon. He then uses the inherited When Attacking effect of GrandGalemon to unsuspend.[1] As it deleted a Digimon, the inherited effects of Galemon, Pteromon, and Fluffymon give 1 memory each — moving Sam from 4 to 1. As Zephagamon has Security Attack+1, it checks two cards — BT20-092: Battle NPC and BT8-108: Mist Memory Boost!. The security effects put both cards onto Sam's field. Sam uses the On Play effect of Battle NPC to put 3 Cost or lower Digimon (BT16-040: Wormmon[1]) under it.
At the start of Sam's turn, he uses the effect of Battle NPC to destroy itself and play the Wormmon from under it for free. He uses its On Play effect, which allows it to digivolve to a lv4 Insect type of Free Attribute Digimon for 1 cost lower — and uses it to digivolve to P-110: Shadramon for 1 cost. Shadramon's On Play effect allows him to play a suspended Veemon or Wormmon from his Trash for free, which he uses to play EX3-004: Veemon.[1] Veemon's On Play effect lets Sam trash a card with Imperialdramon in its text or a Free Attribute Digimon to draw two cards. Whether he used this isn't specified. Sam uses the Delay effect of Mist Memory Boost!, trashing it to gain two Memory, and then plays another BT16 Wormmon from his hand for 3 cost — its effect allowing Veemon to digivolve to BT20-011: ExVeemon for a lower cost. ExVeemon's When Digivolving effect allows Sam to DNA Digivolve two of his Digimon into either an Imperialdramon or to a Free Attribute Digimon, and uses it to DNA his two lv4 Digimon into BT16-077. He uses Dinobeemon's When Digivolving effect to play a Lv5 or lower Free Attribute Digimon from his Trash, and uses it to play BT20-074: Dinobeemon who's On Play effect allows him to return a an Imperialdramon or Free Attribute Digimon from his Trash to his hand (Dragon Mode ACE). He DNA digivolves the two Dinobeemon into the retrieved ACE, who is unable to delete Zephagamon with its When Digivolving effect, since it's immune to effects for the rest of this turn. It's able to use the rest of its When Digivolving effect though, which allows it to digivolve to an Imperialdramon Figther Mode from the hand or trash for free. Figther Mode's When digivolving effect makes Shoto unable to play Digimon or Tamers until the end his turn, and trashes his final security shield — Galemon. Figther Mode attacks Shoto directly, but just like Sam had been doing the entire duel — Shoto overwrites the Zephagamon card into his hand into BT20-101: Zephagamon ACE. As he is being attacked, he uses the counter Blast Digivolve effect of ACE — digivolving it for free on top of a lv6 Vortex Warrior with a Play Cost lower than 11. He uses the When Digivolving effect to suspend Wormmon[1], then uses the rest of the effect to send Figther Mode to the bottom of his deck as there are two suspended Digimon on the field (since Figther Mode suspended to attack). As Dragon Mode ACE left the field, its Overflow effect lowers Sam's memory by 4, putting Shoto onto 4. BT20 Dinobeemon's Partition effect activates as it had left the field, allowing it to play the Shadramon and ExVeemon it had used to DNA digivolve to the field for free. ExVeemon's On Play effect allows them to DNA Digivolve, and as such they DNA digivolve right back into Dinobeemon. Dinobeemon's effect then adds Dragon Mode Ace back into his hand.
- Sam seems to have chosen not to play a Veemon/Wormmon via Shadramon's On Play effect.
At the start of Shoto's turn, he gains a memory via his tamer as Sam has a Digimon — taking him to 5. Shoto pays 3 memory and plays ST18-04: Pteromon, which reveals the top three cards of his deck and allows him to add 1 card with Bird or Avian in its traits and one card with Vortex Warriors or LIBERATOR in its traits. He adds ST18-14: Shoto Kazama (LIBERATOR), then plays it for a cost of 4. As his turn just came to an end, he uses the Vortex effect of Zephagamon ACE and attacks a Digimon with it. He uses the effect of ST18 Shoto, changing the attack from the unspecified Digimon to Sam. As Sam has no security shields remaining, Shoto wins.
