Synopsis[]

Shoto Kazama dreams of when he and Owen Dreadnought were children. Shoto ran up to Owen and challenged him to a duel — intent on ending Owen's winning streak. Owen was reluctant, as he needed to go home to help his Mother out around the house, though gave in when Shoto asked for just the one duel.

Owen won yet again, extending his winning streak, with Shoto complaining that his deck of vanilla cards were supposed to be meta. Owen told him his deck wasn't balanced and focused too much on vanillas, though as Shoto asks for advice on making his deck better — Owen prepared to leave, since he had to get home as he had already made clear. Shoto protests went in vain, though as Owen left he promised he'll duel him again soon.

Upon Shoto's arrival at home his mother frantically asked if he had been with Owen as the Kinosaki Clinic had called her asking if Owen was at her house. She explained that Owen's mother had collapsed whilst shopping and told him to get into her car as they were going to get Owen and go with him to the hospital.

In the present day, Shoto wakes up at home having dreamt about said previous events again. He also thinks back to the Imperialdramon rampage from two weeks earlier, and how it had shut the game down for maintenance for two days. He thinks back to how Yao Qinglan told him about that overriding cards was the key to defeating the enemy and how Digimon in LACUNA used to have that ability and that they had realized this was no longer the case as Wormmon had clearly given Sam the Clown the ability to override cards. He also finds it weird that he was able to use the ability as well. He thinks on how it's weird that Imperialdramon was cloned 50 times, and that their movements were co-ordinated and seemed like the entire point was for it to be defeated by the debug team since it chose to duel players despite the fact it could've done damage with its actual attacks. His thoughts move to how the Owen he knows in the present isn't the same Owen he knew as a kid, though this thought is cut off as his alarm rings. He goes to the arcade and logs into Liberator as he was finally allowed to play again after they had spent nearly two weeks analysing his avatar. Back to his Owen thought, he decides he was going to talk to him.

Pteromon happily reunites with Shoto, bored since he wasn't allowed to log in for two weeks. He tells Pteromon about how he wants to find and talk to Owen, as he thinks he can't move forward if he doesn't settle things with him. He and Pteromon meet up with their friends and ask where Owen is — though they say don't know.

Shoto looks around LACUNA, and eventually finds Owen in the Amber Remains — Owen having just won a duel. Owen greets him and brings up how he heard Shoto was involved in the Imperialdramon incident, though quickly turns to asking what he wants. Shoto is unable to explain himself, though Owen assumes it's about "that" and asks if he remembered their promise. Shoto says he came for that reason, but doesn't remember and asks what said promise was. An annoyed Owen then challenges Shoto to a duel.

Synopsis[]

Owen Dreadnought and Shoto Kazama duel.

An annoyed Shoto complains to himself about how he was doing this in the first place so that he could talk to Owen, only for Owen to not talk to him at all other than declare card effects. This changes during one of Owen's turns, where he admits he has had his eyes on Shoto ever since he started to play Digimon Liberator having come across him when investigating reports about players seeing wild Digimon in the Emerald Coast. This has Shoto realize Owen had actually already seen him before they met again in the Garden, and this becomes even more apparent when Owen mentions how annoyed he was at watching Shoto's passion for the game drop after losing to Arisa Kinosaki over and over again. As Owen clears Shoto's field, he praises him for having a different spark in his eye than when he usually starts to lose — bringing up that that's how he used to be when they were children. Shoto says he lost that spark as he blamed himself for Owen's mother's hospitalization, as had he not forced Owen to continuing duelling him as a kid — he would've been there to do the chores for his mother instead of her collapsing from having had to do them herself. Whenever he would get too into something he'd get scared, worried that if he got too into it — something else he cares about might leave him again, like how that accident had forced Owen to move away. Owen tells him that he didn't need to worry over what had happened so much as that whilst that accident caused him to leave Japan to look after his unwell mother — he was going to leave Japan and return to his home country at some point regardless. Owen brings up how Shoto said he would show him his response to his question after joining the debug team, and admits he has no idea what Shoto was on about as he hadn't asked him anything and that he probably just made it up as a form of protection. As Shoto responds, Owen cuts him off — saying that what the imaginary Owen said means nothing and that he had changed as a person because of this imaginary Owen. Shoto once again blames himself for what happened to Owen's mother; though Owen tells him to shut up that he needs to stop blaming himself and declares he will have his WarGreymon card incinerate the coward that Shoto had become. As Owen defeats Shoto, Shoto remembers the promise the two of them had made as children, followed by Shoto and Pteromon crying over Shoto's loss. After they wipe away their tears — they see Owen smiling at them. Shoto's friends arrive, with Shoto realizing that his story had started over again.

Gameplay notes[]

Owen Dreadnought vs. Shoto Kazama[]

Note: This section includes coverage of actions that were omitted in the comic but explained in its Battle Coverage article. This writeup uses ref notes to indicate these instances. In addition, standard actions such as drawing a card at start of turn or after digivolving are generally omitted for clarity.

The start of the duel is skipped. Owen Dreadnought has two security cards left, the Tamer cards BT18-087: Owen Dreadnought and BT21-081: Owen Dreadnought, and a BT21-025: Lamiamon that had digivolved from BT21-017: Dimetromon in his Breeding Area. Shoto Kazama has BT20-085: Shoto Kazama[1], EX7-036: Zephagamon[1], ST18-04: Pteromon[1], and ST18-05: Muchomon[1] in his Battle Area, and has four security cards left.

On Owen's turn, he begins with 4 memory and moves Lamiamon from the Breeding Area to the Battle Area, then activates two copies of ST1-13: Shadow Wing for 1 cost each — putting him at 2 — with each increasing Lamiamon's DP by 3000. He pays 4 memory, putting Shoto onto 2, to digivolve it to BT21-029: Medusamon. He uses its When Digivolving effect, which destroys the Digimon on Shoto's field with the lowest DP (Pteromon). As a Digimon was just deleted, Medusamon's Once Per Turn effect activates — giving Shoto a Petrification token with the effect that it can't suspended and if it dies — its owner has to Trash their top security card. Owen uses the effect of his BT21 Tamer card, suspending it to give a Reptile or Dragonkin Digimon (Medusamon) the Piercing effect as well as allowing it to attack. Medusamon attacks and deletes Muchomon, and uses its Piercing ability to check security — checking two as it has the Security Attack+1 ability (EX7-032: Galemon and ST18-07: Kokatorimon[1]). As a card was just removed from Shoto's security, the inherited effects of Dimetromon and BT21-008: Elizamon activate — each giving Owen 1 memory, putting it at 0. This also activates the effect of BT18 Owen, which allows him to delete a Digimon with less than 5000DP by suspending it as one of Shoto's security cards was just removed. He uses it to destroy the Petrification token as it has 3000. This removes another of Shoto's security cards (EX7-034: GrandGalemon[1]), since its On Deletion effect was activated.

  • The battle write up is inconsistent. It shows this security card as GrandGalemon at the start of the duel, then claims later in text it was Pteromon.

Lamiamon's inherited effect also activates, allowing him to Play a Reptile or Dragonkin Digimon with less than 6000DP for free. He uses it to play BT21-015: Cyclonemon, who has 5000DP.

  • Cyclonemon's On Play effect tries to delete a Digimon with less than 5000DP, but it fails as it has no targets.

Owen uses the Option Card BT21-093: Raging Serpentine, paying a cost of 4 instead of 8 as Shoto has less than 4 security, which deletes the Digimon on Shoto's field with the highest DP (Zephagamon). It then places itself in the Battle Area.

Shoto starts his turn with 4 memory, and hatches a EX7-004: Fluffymon[1]. He uses the effect of his Tamer card, returning it to the bottom of his deck to play a Shoto Kazama from his hand for free (EX7-064: Shoto Kazama[1]). The rest of the effect allows him to play a Lv3 Avian or Bird Digimon from his Trash for free, as he doesn't have a Digimon in his Battle Area — which he uses to play Pteromon. He uses Pteromon's effect to reveal the top three cards of his deck and add one Bird/Avian Digimon and one Digimon with Vortex Warriors or LIBERATOR. Any cards not taken go to the bottom of his deck.[1] His uses the effect to add ST18-08: Galemon and GrandGalemon.[1] He pays 2 memory to digivolve Pteromon to Galemon, then pays 2 more to play the Option Card LM-030: Green Scramble which allows a green Digimon to digivolve to a green Digimon in Shoto's hand for 3 cost lower — after which it places itself in the Battle Area. He digivolves Galemon to GrandGalemon for free, and uses its when digivolving effect to suspend itself and make itself immune to opponent effects until the end of Owen's next turn.[1] He pays 5 memory to digivolve GrandGalemon to BT20-1010: Zephagamon ACE. He uses the When Digivolving effect of Zephagamon ACE, and suspends Cyclonemon. As a Digimon just suspended, Zephagamon ACE uses its effect to unsuspend.[1] The rest of its effect activates, allowing Shoto to send one Digimon to the bottom of the deck for every 2 suspended Digimon. As there are two (Cylconemon and Medusamon), he sends Medusamon to the bottom of Owen's deck. As his turn just came to an end, he has Zephagamon ACE attack the suspended Cyclonemon using Vortex[1], destroying it. Shoto's Tamer card gives it Piercing and Blocker (though this is redundant, as it already has those effects), and it uses Piercing to checks a security card (BT21-007: Agumon[1]) and survives.

Owen hatches a BT21-001: Gigimon, then gains 1 memory from his BT21 Tamer card as Shoto has a Digimon — putting him at 6. He pays 7 memory, and plays BT21-024: Cyberdramon — who's On Play effect has Shoto put a card from his hand (Shoto puts Zephagamon[1]) to the bottom of his security — with Shoto then forced to trash the top security card (Pteromon[1]).

  • The battle write up is inconsistent. It shows his final security to be Pteromon, but later claims in text the final card was GrandGalemon.

As a card was just removed from Shoto's security, Raging Serpentine's Delay effect activates — allowing one Reptile or Dragonkin Digimon to digivolve to a Reptile or Dragonkin Digimon in Owen's hand for free. He digivolves Cyberdramon to BT21-026: WarGreymon, then uses the effect of his BT21 Tamer card to suspend it and give WarGreymon Piercing, as well as allowing it to attack. As Wargreymon has the Rush ability, it's allowed to attack even though it was played (as Cyberdramon) this turn and attacks Shoto directly. Owen uses WarGreymon's Raid ability, allowing it to change its attack target to the Digimon on Shoto's field with the highest DP (Zephagamon ACE) and proceeds to destroy as it has higher DP. Its Piercing effect destroys the Zephagamon Shoto had put into security. WarGreymon's One Per Turn effect then unsuspends it, as a Digimon was just deleted. As Zephagamon ACE was destroyed, its Overflow Ability lowers Shoto's memory by 4, which moves the memory counter to 3 on Owen's side. Since WarGreymon was unsuspended, it attacks again — and as Shoto has no security cards, Owen wins.
