Etymologies[]

Nikorai Yakovich Petorofu (ニコライ・ヤーコヴィッチ・ペトロフ)

Full name listed in some Japanese gaming sites,[2] although the patronymic is omitted from both official sites. Name and surname officially romanized as "Nikorai Petorofu" in Digimon World Re:Digitize: Decode trailers.[3]

  • Ru: Mistranslation of Nikolai (Николаи?) or Nikolay (Николай?). Masculine East Slavic name that means "victory of the people", possibly a reference to MachGaogamon, who carries a championship belt and attacks with "Winning Knuckle". Possibly taken from Japanese "ni" (? lit. "two"), as Niko is usually the second character listed in official character lists.
  • Yakovich (ヤーコヴィッチ Yākovicchi?). Intended as a patronymic for "Yakov". However, the correct male patronymic for "Yakov" is Yakovlevich (Яковлевич?) (ヤーコヴレヴィッチ Yākovurevicchi?).
  • Ru: Mitranslation of Petrov (Петров?). Russian surname that means "rock", possibly a reference to the Memorial Stela. May also be a reference to Aleksei Zinovyevich Petrov.
Nicolai Petrov

Named used in the English version of the Digimon Card Game.

  • Ru: Alternate translation of Nikolai (Николаи?). Masculine East Slavic name that means "victory of the people", possibly a reference to MachGaogamon, who carries a championship belt and attacks with "Winning Knuckle". Possibly taken from Japanese "ni" (? lit. "two"), as Nico is usually the second character listed in official character lists.
  • Ru: Petrov (Петров?). Russian surname that means "rock", possibly a reference to the Memorial Stela. May also be a reference to Aleksei Zinovyevich Petrov.
Niko (ニコ)

Commonly used nickname in the Japanese version. English would presumably shorten it to "Nico" rather than "Niko", since his name is translated as "Nicolai" rather than "Nikorai".

  • Diminutive of his name, although not a short form. Possibly taken from "ni" (? lit. "two"), as Nico is usually the second character listed in official character lists. "Ko" may be a reference to "ko" (? lit. "child"), a suffix common in Japanese feminine names, in contrast with "Akiho", which when written as 陽 can mean "masculine". Nico and Akiho appear to be designed after an yin and yang theme, as Nico is partnered to a Gaomon, a blue Digimon whose Mega form, MirageGaogamon, is associated with the moon, and Akiho is partnered to a Biyomon, whose Digivolution line is mostly composed of Digimon who are red or a variant of it, and whose Mega form, Hououmon, is associated with light. There also are some moments in Re:Digitize where Taiga must choose which of the two he'll follow.

Fiction[]

Digimon World Re:Digitize (manga)[]

Nico lives with his father, Yakov Borisovich Petrov, and is Taiga's neighbor. He is a player of Digital Monster and his Partner is a Gaomon named Sashenka.
