DA02 ep32 recap Episode recap for If I Only Had A Heart. |
Synopsis[]
Having easily defeated one opponent after another in a series of battles, BlackWarGreymon continues his quest to find one that he deems worthy in a vast desert. He suddenly encounters a score of Mammothmon made from 10 Control Spires each, led by Arukenimoon and Mummymon, who scold him for running away from them. Seeing this as an opportunity to get even stronger, BlackWarGreymon immediately challenges the Mammothmon, who charge in for the attack.
Arukenimon and Mummymon are shocked to see four of the Mammothmon easily disposed of while BlackWarGreymon emerges virtually unscathed. BlackWarGreymon continues to defeat the Mammothmon one by one as Arukenimon faints in Mummymon's arms. BlackWarGreymon, feeling empty inside, screams out in agony, much to Arukenimon's amusement. She then laughs at him and mocks him for having so-called "imaginary" feelings that don't exist, even going as far as telling him that he is her puppet; Mummymon jokingly says it would be a great puppet show.
BlackWarGreymon is in denial of Arukenimon's theories of imagining his feelings, since he was made from 100 Control Spires, not just one. Mummymon then suggests to BlackWarGreymon that he follow orders from him and Arukenimon to end his suffering, but he refuses to take orders from those who are weaker than he is, infuriating him. Arukenimon tells him off and explains that she won't fall for BlackWarGreymon's insults, so they leave BlackWarGreymon to finish off the Mammothmon and to focus on a new plan.
While driving along the wasteland in their car, Mummymon suggests to a despondent Arukenimon that they find the so-called Destiny Stones, sacred rocks that maintain the boundaries between the Real World and the Digital World. Having no other alternative, she accepts this suggestion, and both drive off toward one nearby. Tentomon, having just seen them drive off, quickly informs the DigiDestined while BlackWarGreymon continues defeating the Mammothmon, envying them for having such simple minds and not feeling any pain.
Meanwhile, in Davis' apartment in the Real World, Jun, after just getting out of the shower, gives him the exact same sentiments for eating, sleeping, and playing video games, but Davis protests that video games help him keep his mind sharp. Jun then notices a pimple on her chin and has a mental breakdown because she's worried Matt will see it while Davis simply ignores her, infuriating her, unplugging the TV set and slapping him for insulting the pimple. DemiVeemon hands Davis his D-Terminal with a new email from Kari, so they go to the Digital World posthaste.
Back in the DigiWorld, just one Mammothmon remains for BlackWarGreymon to defeat, but he spots a flower that's about to get trampled; he uses his body as a shield to protect it from Mammothmon's giant foot while he gets stomped on over and over. He manages to overpower the Mammothmon's weight and uses his Terra Destroyer attack to finish it off. Seeing the flower unharmed, he then questions his motives.
Meanwhile, Ken and Minnomon also receive an email from Kari and proceed to join her and Davis while BlackWarGreymon converses with the flower. He then crushes the flower under his foot, asking himself why he should care about one flower.
Back with Arukenimon and Mummymon, they found the legendary Destiny Stone. Arukenimon uses several nearby Control Spires to create an artificial Knightmon to destroy it.
Later, Agumon sees BlackWarGreymon, recognizing him to an extent, and introduces himself, for he Warp Digivolves into WarGreymon. BlackWarGreymon has no interest at first because he believes the circumstances of their existences are different, but then changes his mind and decides to get some answers from him.
Davis and Kari, riding on ExVeemon and Nefertimon, respectively, arrive at the Destiny Stone as Nefertimon explains about the Destiny Stone's great power, but should it be destroyed, something bad will happen to the Digital World. Knowing that Knightmon needs to be stopped, Davis advises Kari to warn the others and meet up with him ASAP while he and ExVeemon hold Knightmon off.
Agumon doesn't have much knowledge about where his "heart" is, but explains to BlackWarGreymon that when he cares about someone more than himself, the love for that someone exists. BlackWarGreymon asks why he has a heart, even though Agumon doesn't exactly know why either.
Meanwhile, Yolei, Cody, T.K., and Kari arrive on the scene to help Davis and ExVeemon stop Knightmon, but are ambushed by Arukenimon and Mummymon, who have just transformed into their true forms.
Back with Agumon, he offers to be BlackWarGreymon's friend, although BlackWarGreymon doesn't know much in the way of friendship. BlackWarGreymon then decides that even though he just met Agumon and wants to know more, he hasn't gotten any answers from him regarding his heart and wants to move on, but thinking of the flower he protected and then crushed earlier makes him question why he was created in the first place.
Arukenimon, Mummymon, and Knightmon have the DigiDestined's Digimon all tied up until Ken and Stingmon arrive to save them; ExVeemon and Stingmon, along with Aquilamon and Gatomon, DNA Digivolve to Paildramon and Silphymon, respectively, and turn the tables on Knightmon; however, Knightmon uses his Beserk Sword on the Holy Ring, damaging the Destiny Stone.
BlackWarGreymon still believes that friendship will distract him from becoming the most powerful Digimon, but agrees to be Agumon's friend to prove if his heart exists. Agumon explains about shaking hands with new friends. Suddenly, BlackWarGreymon experiences great pain, much to Agumon's concern. Unable to resist the worsening pain he's experiencing, he roars out and flies off to the source at remarkable speed.
Arukenimon, Mummymon, and Knightmon all try to destroy the Destiny Stone, but their attacks prove to be futile. Seeing something come at them, they retreat. The DigiDestined believe they won until Ken spots the same thing that Arukenimon and Mummymon saw, which turns out to be BlackWarGreymon quickly arriving on the scene, much to their shock. BlackWarGreymon proceeds to destroy Knightmon. Then he targets the Destiny Stone with his Terra Destroyer attack. Although the Digimon try valiantly to stop him, he simply defeats them with another one, causing them to revert. Two Terra Destroyer attacks later, the Stone is destroyed, causing the area to warp with tornado-like winds. Arukenimon and Mummymon are pleased because they didn't have to order BlackWarGreymon to destroy the Destiny Stone because he did it of his own free will.

Quotes[]
Arukenimon: "Tell me I didn't see what I just saw!"
Mummymon: "Well, if what you saw was four large Mammothmon disintegrating, then I can't tell you that 'cause that's what you saw!"
- —BlackWarGreymon's power surprises even his creators.
BlackWarGreymon: "I defeat my opponent so easily. It's not enough. I still feel an emptiness inside. No matter what I do, nothing seems to fill this void. WHY DO I FEEL SO EMPTY!?"
- —Nothing seems to fill the void inside BlackWarGreymon.
Mummymon: "There is an easy way to end your suffering."
BlackWarGreymon: "How do you propose I do that?"
Mummymon: "Just simply forget about all these feelings nonsense and follow orders like you're supposed to!"
- —Despite his comedic nature, Mummymon isn't without ruthlessness.
Jun: "All you ever think about is eating, sleeping, and playing video games. What a simple creature you are."
Davis: "There are plenty of other things that I think about."
Jun: "Oh, yeah? Name one."
Davis: "Well, lots of things. But thinking about them hurts my head, so in order to keep my mind as razor sharp as it needs to be, I'm taking a break from thinking to play some video games."
- —By this logic, Davis' head must hurt a lot.
Ken: "Do you know what this means?"
Minomon: "Kari spells her name 'F.Y.I.?'"
Ken: "You missed my point."
- —Kari contacts Ken and Minomon with information on Arukenimon.
"You and I are very different. I mean, besides the obvious, you're a little flower, and I'm the most powerful Digimon on two worlds. I-I mean, you are alive, and I am just artificial. You have real feelings, and I can only imagine it, like I imagine this pain in my heart."
- —BlackWarGreymon, comparing himself to a flower.
BlackWarGreymon: "What if I'm not capable of being a friend? That would prove once and for all if I have a heart or not."
Agumon: "Of course you're capable! Everybody's capable of being someone's friend!"
BlackWarGreymon: "But what if..."
Agumon: "What if? Always with the "what if"s! What if my aunt had a mustache? She'd be my uncle!"
BlackWarGreymon: "She would? Your logic confuses me."
- —Agumon's attempt to reason with BlackWarGreymon is getting him nowhere.
Other notes[]
Continuity errors
- When BlackWarGreymon causes all the Digimon to de-digivolve, Yolei refers to Pururumon as Poromon.
Animation errors
- When BlackWarGreymon raises his right arm before attacking a Mammothmon, his claws are a darker shade of gray than the rest of the Dramon Destroyer, when it should be vice-versa.
- When Tentomon appears, a second shot shows his right upper-arm as red instead of green.
Dubbing changes
- In the English Dub, Mummymon has been searching for the whereabout of the Destiny Stone prior to reuniting with Arukenimon, as opposed to the original.
- The English Dub omits the discussion between Arukenimon and Mummymon about whether or not do they have hearts, instead replaced by Mummymon asking Arukenimon out for a little picnic before beginning their mission of destroying the Destiny Stone.
- When Mummymon uses his plasma gun attack he calls it "Snake Bandage", which is the name of his other attack. This attack doesn't have a name in the original version. Similarly, Arukenimon's spider web attack doesn't have a name in the original version, but is identified as a variation of her "Spider Thread" attack.
Digimon references
- This episode shows a screenshot of Tai and Agumon from the Digimon Adventure episode The Fate of Two Worlds.
Real-world references
- The English dub title of this episode is a reference to the song of the same name from the 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz.
- The games console that Davis is playing in his home resembles a PlayStation.
- When Jun disconnects Davis' game, the screen shows a frog-like creature and a red slime with a face as a reference to Dragon Quest.
Miscellaneous trivia
