The , also known as Species, is an overarching group that a Digimon can belong to. The concept originates from the Digimon Pendulums. Digimon within the same family may have traits in common, such as how Wind Guardians Digimon are often capable of flight or how Dragon's Roar Digimon tend to resemble dragons.

  +
In the Digital Monster Card Game and Digi-Battle Card Game, each Digimon family is initially represented by the background color of the card, where it helps denote what cards may digivolve into other cards at a glance. These families become more important in the Digimon World Data Squad and DS Digimon Story games, where these families help determine what attacks Digimon are strong or weak to, as well as influence Digivolution requirements.
The eight DigiMemories, also written as , are powerful items that appear primarily in Digimon Next, but are intertwined with the frequently appearing concepts of "Fields" and "Species".

The DigiMemories are special items carried by the Illegal Digimon, carried within their hexagonal Mu mark. Each DigiMemory is carried by one who can be considered the pinnacle of their family, either a Tamer's partner or a "Sage", and the Demon Lord Barbamon seeks to collect all of the DigiMemories in order to control the world through NEO, whom he intends to birth. Though defeated before accomplishing his goal, Barbamon managed to obtain enough DigiMemories to awaken NEO in an incomplete form, who takes the rest for himself. After seeing that he is not needed, however, NEO returns the DigiMemories to the Digital World, using their power to restore the destruction he caused.

DigiMemories

The DigiMemories from Digimon Next. From left to right: Dark, Holy, Dragon, Beast, Bird, Machine, Aquan, and Insect-Plant

The Family (フィールド Fīrudo?, lit. "Field"), also known as Species, is an overarching group that a Digimon can belong to. The concept originates from the Digimon Pendulums. Digimon within the same family may have traits in common, such as how Wind Guardians Digimon are often capable of flight or how Dragon's Roar Digimon tend to resemble dragons.
