Synopsis[]

Shoto Kazama, Owen Dreadnought, and Close duel against three NPC in a 3v3 duel.

Shoto wins, and celebrates with Pteromon. Pteromon praises Shoto for getting stronger, though Shoto says he still isn't where he wants to be just yet and needs to get even stronger. They look over to Owen, and see he had won before Shoto had. This meant they had won the 3v3, since only two of them needed to win. As Shoto wonders out loud how Close was doing, Owen criticises Shoto for not being able to "assess the situation on his own" — though does praise him for proving he wasn't there as roster filler. The praise shocks Shoto, who wonders why Owen had suddenly "become a different person", though realizes he hadn't when Owen says he still has a long way to go to catch up to him. Owen, who had been watching Close's duel, points out that her duel wasn't going very well as she had only two security to her opponent's five and explains the current state of the board. As Shoto settles down to watch the rest of the duel, he realizes how weird it is that a trio of Deep Savers NPC were hanging out in the Obsidian Desert — with Owen saying they probably travelled there because of Close. As Shoto asks why they would do that, he tells Shoto to shut up as the NPC was about to make its next move. As the NPC takes another of her shields, Shoto worries she was going to lose — though Owen tells him to be quiet and watch and that he was confident she was going to win. They watch Close start her turn, with Shoto looking on in awe when she uses EX8-055: Pyramidimon.

Gameplay notes[]

Shoto Kazama vs. NPC[]

The start of the duel is skipped. Shoto Kazama is on 3 memory, and has EX7-034: GrandGalemon and ST18-14: Shoto Kazama on the field. The NPC has no security shields left, and has EX8-025: Whamon.

Shoto pays 4 memory to digivolve GrandGalemon to EX7-036: Zephagamon, with this putting the NPC on 1. He activates its When Digivolving effect to suspend Whamon. As his turn has now come to an end, Zephagamon's Vortex effect activates — allowing it to attack a Digimon. He has it attack Whamon, then uses its When Attacking effect to send Whamon to the bottom of the NPC's deck. At the same time, he uses the inherited effect of GrandGalemon to unsuspend Zephagamon as it had just attacked a Digimon. He also uses the effect of his Tamer, suspending it to allow it to change its attack target from Whamon to the NPC. As the NPC had no security shields left, Shoto wins.

Close vs. NPC[]

The start of the duel is skipped. Close has two security shields remaining, two copies of EX8-067: Close, and EX8-051: Proganomon in the Breeding Area. The NPC has 0 memory, all five of its security shields, EX8-020: Dolphmon in the Battle Area, and EX8-027: Plesiomon in the Breeding Area.

The NPC has Dolphmon attack Close directly, with it checking EX8-050: Gogmamon. Dolphmon has only 4000DP compared to Gogmamon's 7000DP, but survives due to the inherited Jamming effect of EX8-017: Crabmon — which prevents it from dying in security battles. It pays 3 memory to digivolve Dolphmon to EX8-024: MegaSeadramon, with its When Digivolving effect unsuspending itself.

Close draws a card, then moves Proganomon from the Breeding Area to the Battle Area. She has it attack the NPC directly, then uses Proganomon's Collision ability to give the Blocker ability to all of the NPC's Digimon. This also forces them to block an attack if they are able to. MegaSeadramon is forced to block the attack, and as both it and Proganomon have 7000DP — they would both die. As Proganomon was about to die, Close uses its Fragment effect to trash 3 of its digivolution sources in exchange for it surviving. She trashes EX8-048: Landramon, EX8-047: Sunarizamon, and EX8-005: Tumblemon. She uses the inherited effect of Tumblemon, gaining a memory as it was just trashed — putting her at 4.

  • Both Sunarizamon and Landramon's inherited effect also try to activate (each able to delete an opponent's Digimon with less than 4 Play Cost) but are unable to do anything as the NPC has no Digimon on its field.

Proganomon uses its Piercing effect, allowing its attack to remove a security shield since it survived the battle. This checks a EX8-058: Gesomon, with Proganomon surviving as it had higher DP. Close pays 4 memory, and digivolves Proganomon to EX8-055: Pyramidimon.

Synopsis[]

The duel between Close and the Deep Savers NPC continues. When Close looks to be on the ropes, Owen and Close confidently proclaim Close's imminent victory, surprising Shoto, and are vindicated as Close pulls off a masterful combo to defeat the NPC.

Sunarizamon exchanges mutual thanks with Shoto and Owen. In particular, he asks the awed Shoto to relax, as to Pteromon's consternation he's beginning to deprecate himself in comparison to Owen and Close. Pteromon reminds Shoto that they are still beginners and are in this together.

Unchained, who had been watching a visual feed of the duel, happilly assesses the trio's teamwork as passable, then decides to begin their plan by preparing to send the Maquinamon-modified Wormmon to attack them.

Gameplay notes[]

Close vs. NPC[]

Note: This section includes coverage of actions that were omitted in the comic but explained in its Battle Coverage article. This writeup uses ref notes to indicate these instances. In addition, standard actions such as drawing a card at start of turn or after digivolving are generally omitted for clarity.

As a Digimon (EX8-051: Proganomon) has just digivolved to a Mineral or Rock type Digimon (EX8-055: Pyramidimon) Close suspends both copies of EX8-067: Close to use their effects. She can put up to four (two for each) Mineral or Rock type Digimon from her trash under that Digimon as digivolution sources and puts another Pyramidimon, EX8-047: Sunarizamon, EX8-046: Gotsumon, and EX8-005: Tumblemon.

She uses the When Digivolving effect of Pyramidimon, trashing three Mineral or Rock digivolution sources (Proganomon, Gotsumon, and Tumblemon[1] ) to unsuspend and gain Security Attack+1. As Tumblemon was just trashed by a Mineral Digimon, Close gains 1 memory — putting her at 1. She has Pyramidimon attack the NPC, with the two security checks being EX8-061: MarineDevimon and EX8-025: Whamon — who's DP are too low to defeat it.[1] Close pays 2 memory to activate the Option Card EX8-070: Zofr Kabus which allows her to trash one digivolution source from her Digimon (she trashes Sunarizamon from under Pyramidimon) to increase its DP by 3000 (taking it to 15000), giving the Collision (when attacking, the opponents Digimon gains Blocker and are forced to block), Reboot (unsuspends during the NPC's unsuspend phase), and Piercing (If it battles a Digimon and survives, it can check a security) abilities, and making it so that it can't be returned to the hand or deck. These all last until the end of the NPC's turn.

  • As Sunarizamon was trashed, its effect tries to destroy a Digimon with a Play Cost lower than 5 — though it fails as there is no target.

As Close's turn just came to and end, Pyramidimon's End of Turn effect activates — allowing her to put three Rock or Mineral Digimon from her Trash under it as digivolution sources. She puts another Pyramidimon, Proganomon, and EX8-049: Golemon.[1]

On the NPC's turn, Pyramidimon unsuspends due to its Reboot effect. The NPC moves EX8-027: Plesiomon from the Breeding Area to the Battle Area, then pays 7 memory to play EX8-026: MetalSeadramon ACE — putting Close at 6 memory. MetalSeadramon's On Play effect activates, de-digivolving one of Close's Digimon. As the top card in its Digivolution stack was another Pyramidimon, Pyramidimon proceeds to de-digivolve into Pyramidimon. The rest of its effect tries to send a Digimon with Play Cost lower than 8 to the bottom of Close's deck, but it fails as there are no targets. As the NPC just played a Deep Savers Digimon, Plesiomon's effect activates — allowing two Digimon on its field to DNA Digivolve to a Deep Savers Digimon in its hand — with the new Digimon able to attack. It has Plesiomon and MetalSeadramon DNA Digivolve to EX8-029: Aegisdramon, with its When Digivolving effect trying to return Pyramidimon to Close's deck. It fails though, since it's immune to said effect thanks to Zofr Kabus. The rest of its effect allows it to Play Digimon with a combined Play Cost of 12 or less to its field from its Digivolution Sources. It plays EX8-017: Crabmon (3) and MetalSeadramon ACE (7). Crabmon's On Play effect gives Aegisdramon the Blocker Ability, whilst MetalSeadramon de-digivolves Pyramidimon. Once again though, the top card of its digivolution sources was another Pyramidimon — and as such it once again de-digivolves into itself. Aegisdramon attacks Close directly, with EX8-024: MegaSeadramon's inherited effect unsuspending it. Aegisdramon checks a EX8-053: BanchoGolemon and survives, since it has higher DP.

On Closes's turn, she plays another copy of Zofr Kabus for 2 memory and uses it to trash Proganomon from its digivolution sources. As Proganomon was trashed, its effect activates — de-digivolving Aegisdramon to Plesiomon. Close pays 3 memory, putting her at 1, to play Gotsumon from her hand then digivolves it to P-144: Gotsumon (X Antibody) for free since it's digivolving from Gotsumon. As a Rock Digimon just digivolved, she suspends her two Tamers and uses their effects to put two Proganomon, a Landramon, and Tumblemon under Gotsumon (X Antibody) as digivolution sources.[1] She has Pyramidimon attack, and uses its When Attacking effect to trash three digivolution sources from Gotsumon (X Antibody) to unsuspend itself and give itself Security Attack+1. It trashes the three she just added — and as two of them are Proganomon, both of their effects activate and de-digivolve Plesiomon to MegaSeadramon and then Dolphmon. Landramon's effect then deletes Dolphmon as it has less than 5 Play Cost. Pyramidimon's Collision effect gives MetalSeadramon ACE Blocker, forcing it to block the attack. Since Pyramidimon has more DP, it destroys it, and when MetalSeadramon ACE dies — its Overflow ability causes the NPC to lose 4 memory (essentially giving Close 4, and putting her onto 5). Pyramidimon checks two security due to its Piercing ability, and defeats EX8-021: Seadramon and Plesiomon since it has higher DP than both.[1] Since it was unsuspended from the prior effect, it attacks again — and as the NPC has no security left, Close wins.

Other notes[]

Animation errors

  • In the English version, when P-144: Gotsumon (X Antibody) appears — its name on its nameplate is incorrectly shown as Gostumon_X.
